All of our lorries have a piece of hardware fitted to help us improve vehicle performance and efficiency when delivering and collecting cooking oil. This magic box is supplied by Blue Tree Systems, and it does some impressive things.
Firstly, it tracks the vehicle location and status, including driver name, drive time remaining, and the fuel level. These figures are updated every five minutes.
Secondly, the magic box monitors the performance of the vehicle, how it is driven, and how well our drivers use their vehicles to maximise efficiency. Elements which are measured and contribute to a driver’s performance score include: harsh acceleration and deceleration; over-revving; idling; coasting; use of cruise control; harsh braking; speeding; brake usage; hard cornering. For each driving behaviour, the system records detail surrounding any event that contributes to the driver’s score. This report is then emailed to our Operations Manager each week, so that these can be reviewed with the driver. By using the driver analytics and coaching tools we are aiming for immediate fuel savings of over 10%.
Lastly, our drivers’ tachograph information is consistently uploaded to Blue Tree Systems. This means the team in the office can always see how much driving time each driver has left. It also means that the tachograph information is automatically downloaded. Any problems are automatically reported each week to our Ops Manager, so they can be discussed with the driver. This ensures better compliance and improved road safety.
