Proper Oils attended the Waste Reduction Challenge Final prize giving held at NESTA’s headquarters in Chancery Lane yesterday evening.
This was when the results were announced and when one of six finalists would win £50,000. The prize was announced by the Right Honourable Nick Hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society.
Proper Oils entry was Unblocking the Community – a community recycling scheme for domestic cooking oil – which is designed to make it easy for households to collect & recycle their Used Vegetable Oil & Animal Fats. We were incredibly pleased to be selected as a semi-finalist way back in March, and be awarded £10,000 to set up the first Used Cooking Oil collection & recycling scheme of its kind. The lasting legacy is that our household recycling scheme “Unblocking the Community” is continuing, being improved, and being promoted so we can recycle more waste cooking oil and offer this service to more communities.
The judges included waste industry policy formers and the Cabinet Office, explained how difficult it was to choose just one winner from such a competitive range of projects. Congratulations to the Gleaning Network who won the prize. The evening included the chance to catch up with fellow innovators and share experiences and plans for the future. It was great to meet up with the other finalists again. Well done everyone.
