Household Cooking Oil Recycling – Innovation in practice

100 percent open company logo

The UK’s first community recycling scheme for household used cooking oils was launched earlier this year by Proper Oils.  This has been successfully established with the help of the prize money we won by being selected as a finalist for NESTA’s “Waste Reduction Challenge”.

Being the first to offer this community-based scheme for households has given us unique insights in to how best to meet the needs of those taking part in the scheme. As part of our award, support has been provided from innovation consultants 100% Open. Project Manager Nick Ives, and Proper Oils Managing Director, Stephen Hurton met with Sean Miller from the company to work our next steps with the venture.

One positive outcome of providing this service that enables households to dispose of their waste cooking oils and fats ethically and sustainably, is that it has brought us new customers from the business community.  It’s encouraging to see that both households and businesses alike continue to seek, and value, new ways to develop sustainable and community-based behaviour.

With the help of Sean, we have compiled our lessons learnt into a report that will be presented back to NESTA. Our aim is to maximise the amount of used cooking oil recycled from domestic homeowners by making it easy for them to recycle their oil.  This complements the used cooking oil collection service which we provide to 1000’s of commercial caterer’s in London & the South of England.
