Why store fats and oils in empty tins?
- Everyone can get hold of a tin
- It’s safe to pour hot oils into
- It’s a great way to reuse a tin
- Tins are easy to recycle
- It’s easy
Will the tin lids leak oils or fats whilst in transit to my nearest community collection vessel?
The plastic lids provided have a decent seal. However, you never know what might happen on your journey so it’s sensible to put the sealed can in a plastic bag when transporting it.
Which size tins fit the plastic lids?
The lids are designed to fit normal 400g tin cans, as for tinned tomatoes and baked beans.
Can I use other types of container to store and recycle my waste cooking oils and fats?
Yes. As long as it seals tightly and isn’t glass. For larger amounts generated, for example if you have a deep fat fryer, please pour it into a larger container. To do this, it would be advisable to use a funnel and wait for the oils to cool down before pouring. Other types of container such as glass jars are not appropriate. This is because, although easy to recycle, there is a health and safety issue associated with handling glass waste. If you produce more than 60 litres, please give the office a call on 0208 894 9476 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
As a Community Champion, are there any environmental regulations that I need to be aware of?
We’ve minimised the administrative burden. Unblocking the Community (Proper Oils) have consulted with both the Environment Agency and the London Fire Brigade in creating this scheme. You only need to worry about this if you are setting up a collection point. Please give us a call for more information.
What do the used cooking oils and fats get used for?
The collected oil is taken to the Proper Oils depot where it gets purified and turned in to biofuel. Just think how much more efficient that is than making fuel from scratch!
Can I mix used animal fats and vegetable cooking oils together?
What assurances can I give to household recyclers of certain faiths that certain animal fats won't contaminate me or my used oils?
The collection process has been designed in such a way that vessels containing any used cooking oils and fats don't leak. A condition of qualifying for S2 Environment Agency exemption is that there must be secondary containment of all collected used cooking oils. By following the processes put together for this scheme, this protection is ensured.
How long can the oils/fats be stored for?
As long as you like! Used cooking oils are still ok to recycle after a year.
